Ayyappa Deeksha was started at the beginning of Kartika Masam.Ayyappa’s initiation was carried out with very strict rules.Ayyappa Deeksha is the initiation that is done with the determination to fulfill the desires.Ayyappaswamy, who sits on 18 hills and 18 steps to Sabarimala in Kerala with many rules and regulations, begins their initiation in Karthika Masam.
Due to the arrival of this Karthika masam, devotees from other states as well as the Telugu states go to the Ayyappa temples.During this month special pujas are performed for 41 days with Ayyappa maladharana.
Sabarimala is also one of the world famous temples.Devotees who have been in initiation for 41 days, with great difficulty, cross the 18 hills dressed in irumudi and reach the presence of the Swami and see Shabarigirishu.
There are 18 steps to climb and visit the Swami. The 18 steps at Sannidhanam are called ‘Padunettampadi’.Only those who have worn the iron for 41 days with a strict initiation are eligible to climb these 18 steps. Each step has its own deity.
Devotees visit the Swami by bowing to the 18 steps of the Sannidhanam.Devotees believe that the desires of those who ascend will be fulfilled.
It is also said that 18 instruments were played in the temple during the Swami’s visit.
Every Ayyappa devotee has to climb 18 steps to visit the Swami. These were built with granite. They were coated with panchalohas.
Devotees have to climb the 18 steps of the Swami with their right foot first.
The first five steps in the presence of the Lord are related to the human senses.
They symbolize the eyes, ears, nose, tongue, and touch.
The next 8 steps are related to passions. Each step represents something like lust, anger, passion, drunkenness, envy, jealousy, and hypocrisy.
The next three steps are related to the triplets.
They symbolize the qualities of Sattva, Tamo and Rajo.
And the last two steps refer to education, illiteracy .i.e.ignorance.Devotees firmly believe that those who climb these 18 steps with devotion and respect and visit the Lord will be physically and mentally perfect.
Devotees look at the Lord even as they go up and down the stairs.
