Bengaluru 9th September : Students of Bangalore University (BU) have claimed that the ruling BJP government tried to saffronize the campus of the university by permitting the construction of an Ganesha temple on the campus.Students have been protesting for the last three days to protest against the construction.
The situation took a grave turn when university officials filed a police report against the students who were protesting.
Dr.Jayakara Shetty, Vice Chancellor of Bangalore University has stated that the decision to build the temple wasn’t made during his time as Vice Chancellor.”The decision was taken before and construction has started. The students aren’t allowed to protest about the issue of the temple,” he said.
Shetty was been directed to stop work of construction of the temple in the backdrop of protests by students.
But, when the construction was continuing, he visited the spot and arranged for the work to stop.
The students and organizations such as Naija Horatagaarara Vedike Post-Graduation, Research and Students Federation, have warned university officials that if they continue with the building of the temple, they will make a police complaint against them.
The student organizations are also furious with the filing of an official complaint against them for trying to protect the property of the university.
The students who are agitated claim that it was a plot to saffronise the university and implement the “hidden agenda” by the ruling BJP.Students claimed that the UGC guidelines and laws did not allow the construction of places of worship such as temples or mosque.
The university officials said that the Ganesha temple located near the entry point, was destroyed for road widening years ago.The Bangalore University had then come to an arrangement with the BBMP to relocate the temple to the grounds of the campus.
Sources in the Higher Education department stated that the temple will be constructed without price in the campus and that the protests were part of an alliance of the opposition groups and anti-Hindu forces.
However thousands of students were demonstrating the decision to not let the temple come on campus.
