Los Angeles, Sep 9 : An estimated 69,144 people suffer from homeless in Los Angeles county, the largest in the US in accordance with the results of the Homeless Count 2022, which was released by the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority (LAHSA).The figure is an 4.1 percent increase from the previous count in 2020, according to the authority, noting that the count was not carried out in 2021 in the county, which is home to about 10 million people, because of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The outcomes of the point-in time count, carried out during three nights in February, also revealed 41,980 people living in homelessness in the City of Los Angeles, up 1.7 percent from 2020, according to Xinhua news agency.
It is the capital of Los Angeles County.
LAHSA stated that the results of this year’s homeless count are starkly different from the results from the years of 2018 and 2020, where Los Angeles County saw a 25.9 percent increase as well as the City of Los Angeles experienced an increase of 32 percent.
The authority pointed out that “Angelenos require more affordable homes and economic assistance to avoid future increase in homelessness.”
LAHSA stated that the agency together with its partners have completed 84,000 permanent housing arrangements over the last five years.
With a 62 per percent growth in shelter beds in the beginning of 2019 More individuals are in shelter than ever before, according to the agency.
“Shelter is a crucial and essential component of our system since it protects people from the negative impacts on their health and safety that come from living in a shelter that is not secure,” it added.
