Ransomware highlights how the complexity in IT and infrastructure can lead to an increase in attacks.

A majority of all reported breaches in the first quarter of 2022 included stolen credentials that can be used to launch ransomware and phishing attacks according to the report.

To steal passwords and other confidential information, hackers employ the phishing and malicious email as their most popular infection vectors.

Nearly one percent of emails contain malware-laden links or files more than a quarter (26.5 percent) of all emails were delivered to the user’s email inbox (not restricted by Microsoft365).

“Organisations of all sizes need a holistic approach to cybersecurity that integrates everything from anti-malware to email-security and vulnerability-assessment capabilities,” said Candid Wuest, VP of Cyber Protection Research.

Ransomware gangs, like Conti and Lapsus$, are inflicting serious damage.

The Conti group has demanded the sum of $10 million in ransom payments from the Costa Rican government and has published a lot of the 672GB of information it took.

Lapsus$ hacked 1TB of information and leaked the credentials of more than 70k Nvidia users. The same group also stole 30 GB worth of T-Mobile’s source code.

“Six hundred malicious email campaigns were spotted through the web in the first quarter of 2022.the report found that 58 percent of these emails are attempts to phish.

Another 28 percent of the emails contained malware,” the report noted.

The corporate world is becoming increasingly dispersed and in Q2 the average of 8.3 percent of devices tried to get access to malicious URLs.
