By Saiyed Moziz Imam Zaidi New Delhi, Aug 21 : The English speaking Sonia Doohan heads the students section of the Nationalist Congress Party and is the party’s official spokesperson.She earned her place in the NCP after having succeeded in “rescuing” MLAs from the party from the premises of a Haryana hotel who were aligned with the BJP to form the government in Maharashtra.
This time she was successful, and she attempted the same thing in Goa however, the police were more cautious and swooped the suspect in the hotel.They claimed she was able to check in with false IDs.However, the next day she was allowed to go on bail.
Doohan was born in Hisar and wants to run in the Haryana elections in 2024 as an NCP candidate since she declares she is a fervent supporter of Sharad Pawar.
She claims that despite the minuscule involvement of the NCP in Haryana, “I have an impressive army of 800 volunteers always ready and with them, I was able to save the MLAs of Haryana.I could have done it in Goa as well, but the police were able to capture me since certain of the volunteers were staying in my house.”
While not successful, she came into the spotlight after she tried to save MLAs in an eerily similar “rescue” operation in which she was able to smuggle four NCP MLAs from the Gurugram hotel.It led to the demise of the Devendra Fadnavis government in Maharashtra who had joined forces with NCP’s Ajit Pawar after the Assembly elections were declared in a stalemate.
In Goa she was staying at the Hotel Taj Resort and Convention Centre in Dona Paula where the rebel Shiv Sena MLAs who had rebelled against Uddhav Thackeray, were staying.
Both Doohan and her assistant Shray Kotiyal were released on bail on Sunday, after they were detained by the police.
The NCP had at the time denied the Goa police’s claim that she and her assistant made use of fake documents to gain entry in to the hotel.
Doohan said that they were treated as “terrorists” and hounded by authorities.
The group was in Goa in Goa as tourists, but the goal was to save the MLAs, which was not successful.She claimed she was taken away from the hotel at 5.30 a.m.by police commandos, police and members of a political party that attempted to film the incident.
However, in the Haryana operation, four Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) MLAs from Maharashtra -four of them — Narhari Zhirwal Daulat Daroda Anil Patil, and Nitin Pawar — – were “rescued” by her her team in collaboration with other top leaders of the group who were staying in the Gurugram five-star hotel.
However, there is still a long way to go in the political arena for Doohan who is from Petwar in Haryana.She is president since the year 2018 of the NCP students wing as well as the national spokesperson of the party.
The NCP is not present in the state she hails from, however she states that women like her, given a chance, could make an impact in the legislature and not just be an MLA or MP.
