Washington on August 24, : The life expectancy fell in 2020 by two years in all of the US most likely due to Covid-19 and overdoses, as per new figures that were released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).The CDC’s National Center for Health Statistics on Tuesday published its annual report on deaths in the US that examined death rates in every state as well as the District of Columbia (D.C.) for 2020, the year for which data are available, according to the news agency.
Results showed that from the year the year 2019 until 2020, the life expectancy in the country fell from 0.2 to 3 years across every state and D.C.
In general, the life expectation in the US in 2020 was 77, an increase of 1.8 years from the year 2019.
The states with the highest decreases are states in the Southwest and the border region between Mexico and the US -which includes Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas as along with Louisiana, Mississippi, Illinois, New York, New Jersey as well as D.C.
The smallest decline in life expectancy was recorded in almost all New England states, except for Connecticut and Minnesota, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Utah, Wyoming, Alaska and Hawaii.
According to CDC the CDC, this number was driven mostly by the Covid-19 drug and “increases in unintentional injuries” including deaths from overdoses of drugs.
Mississippi was the state with the lowest life-expectancy (71.9 years) in the nation in 2020, as per the report.On the other hand, Hawaii was the most affluent in the nation, at 80.7 years.
Hawaii was also home to the smallest drop in life expectancy, which was just 0.2 years and New York state saw the most drastic drop, dropping 3 years in 2020.
The report also examined how the data relate to gender.
It was discovered that the women had a higher life expectancy in all states as well as D.C.
The biggest disparity in living expectancy between males and females was 7 years in D.C The lowest difference was discovered in Utah with a life expectancy of 3.9 years.
Overall, the difference between males and females averaged 5.7 years in the US.
