Indian think tank HCL Technologies has been accused by the American think tank of paying low wages to H1B visa holders.The Noida-based company, based on an analysis of internal HCL documents, paid H1B visa holders up to 95 million less than its US counterparts, according to the Economic Policy Institute (EPI).
Thousands of HCL H1B visa holders work as subcontractors for companies such as Disney, FedEx, and Google.The EPI alleges that they were paid less than at least 95 million.
The victims appear to be H1N1 visa holders as well as several American professionals.
The EPI alleges that HCL violated the H1B visa law.The law protects H1B visa holders from being paid less than H1B visa holders.According to data from the HCL internal document, the company is allegedly paying low wages to H1B workers performing duties in all businesses.
In the wake of this, the US Department of Labor wants experts to step in immediately and investigate the wages that HCL and several other companies are paying to H1B visa holders.HCL, however, has yet to respond to the dispute.
However, there has always been some controversy surrounding H1B visas, which allow skilled foreign professionals to work in the United States.Millions of applications for H-1B visas come in every year.
Of these, 65,000 applications will be selected through a computer-based lottery system and US visas will be issued.In addition, another 20,000 visas will be issued to foreign students who have completed higher education at American universities in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
