To understand her character deeply, Genelia Deshmukh relied heavily on director Aleya Sen.The director played a crucial role in shaping the protagonist, paying attention to every detail.Genelia mentions that she had never played a Bengali woman before, and Aleya had a clear vision of the expressions and body language she wanted for the character.
Genelia also interacted with several single mothers to comprehend the complexities of their lives.
The next step was to create the character’s appearance.
Costume designer Karishma Gulati collaborated with Aleya to develop a look that portrayed the character’s individualistic nature while considering the practicality of the outfits.Genelia explains that they opted for a lot of cotton clothes.
Aleya and Karishma dedicated many months to curate the perfect wardrobe for the role.Genelia emphasizes the importance of looking the part and not getting lost in the pursuit of glamour, as it is essential to stay true to the character.
Although Aleya Sen typically doesn’t have a specific actor in mind while writing a story, she admits that Genelia Deshmukh was her first choice for the lead role in “Trial Period.” Genelia’s willingness to undergo look tests and participate in reading sessions, coupled with her real-life experience as a mother, added warmth to her portrayal both on and off the screen.
