Wellington, December 14, : .New Zealand’s food prices fell 0.6% in November, mostly due to lower tomato prices, Stats NZ, the country’s statistical department, said Tuesday. The November tomato prices dropped 49% compared to October.
Stats NZ reported that their prices were still 54% higher than they were a year ago.
In November, the monthly fruit and vegetable price drops were 6.7%.According to Xinhua, the prices of potatoes, broccoli, strawberries, and tomatoes were also lower in November, according Stats NZ.
According to Katrina Dewbery, the consumer prices manager, these falls were partially offset by increased prices for carrots, apples and kiwi.
She said that lower prices on fruit and vegetable were partially offset by higher grocery and non-alcoholic beverage prices.
On a seasonally adjusted basis, overall food prices rose by 0.3 per cent in November, statistics show.
“The 0.3 per cent rise in prices after adjusting for seasonal effects shows that food prices fell by less than they usually do in November,” Dewbery said.
Annually, food prices increased 4 per cent in November, mainly due to higher prices for grocery food, restaurant meals and ready-to-eat food, she said.
“November’s annual movement is similar to the annual movements for the last few months. However, these price increases are higher than they were earlier in the year,” Dewbery added.
