By Sumi Khan Dhaka 29 August : In announcing that efforts of the Bangladesh government were in progress to return the Rohingya refugees the Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal has said that troops from the army would be stationed in Rohingya refugee camps in the event of crime and to stop the illegal smuggling of drugs into Bangladesh.

Incidents of crimes like murder and rape, robbery, drug smuggling and other criminal acts have increased seven-fold in the past five years in the Cox’s Bazar area, officials stated.

Bangladesh Premier Sheikh Hasina has repeatedly mentioned in her speech in relation to the report of police that certain of the Rohingya refugees are engaged in criminal activities and that these camps are turning into a refuge for extremist groups,

“Mobile phones of the Rohingya refugees will be monitored so that they can’t engage in any illegal act,” the Home Minister declared.

Concerning the efforts of the government to end the Rohingya crisis Minister stated: “I hope the Rohingyas will be returned soon.The government’s efforts are not over.”

The number of instances of drugs and arms being transported to Bangladesh from Myanmar have increased nearly two-and-a-half times in the current regime of military compared to what used be reported under the regime of the ousted the leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

Kamal stated that, aside from the most frequent route that borders the Naf River, the contrabands are also able to enter Bangladesh through the land border regions that are remote too.

The situation was exposed when a group of people visited the Rohingya camp in the Cox’s Bazar district of Chittagong division, as well as interacting with officials who are associated with the police agencies.

The rate of growth of the Rohingya population is five percent compared to the rate of one percent of the population of the area.

The Cox’s Bazar area has registered an increase of nearly sevenfold in crime in the past five years.

In 2017, 76 instances of crimes were reported and 159 criminals detained in the year 2017.in 2021 the amount of criminal cases rose to 507 with 1,024 arrests.

Bangladesh which welcomed with wholeheartedly the Rohingya refugees fleeing the Myanmar the military’s brutal crackdown in 2017.The country is under threat due to the growing population, and their alleged involvement in criminality as it tries to find a solution for the crisis, even after five years.
