Raising ‘Jai Telangana’ slogans, Meira Kumar, the Lok Sabha Speaker when the statehood bill was passed, on Friday said that except Congress all political parties had duped the people in the name of statehood.It was only the Congress that had rendered justice to the region and its people, she said.
She was speaking at a programme in Gandhi Bhavan where the party felicitated Telangana participants participants.She recalled that despite innumerable pressures on the UPA government at the Centre, the Congerss president Sonia Gandhi took the bold decision to grant statehood to the region.
“Although the decision was taken to make life of the people in the region more meaningful, AICC leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi are today sad at the situation that prevails in Telangana because of its abject neglect by the BRS government,” she said.
She acknowledged the passage of nine years since the State’s formation but lamented the unchanged challenges faced by Telangana’s farmers and workers.“The Congress is now fighting to get rid of BRS and BJP from the state in order to provide basic facilities to people.Farmers and workers are still facing troubles,” she said.
She recalled her association with Telangana stating that she used to visit Hyderabad along with her father, Babu Jagjivan Ram.She said she enjoyed speaking in Telugu.
