Hyderabad : Priyanka Gandhi recalls Indira, lashes CM KCR

Lifting the morale of the Congress workers ahead of the Telangana Assembly elections later this year, AICC General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Monday, 8 May, made an impassioned plea to the youth and students that once her party was in power in Telangana, it would implement the Hyderabad Youth Declaration which would end the chronic and rampant problem of unemployment in the state.

Addressing her maiden well-attended public meeting at Saroornagar Indoor Stadium in Hyderabad, she said, “If we do not implement the declaration, you can throw us out after five years.

Employment was one of the three cornerstones of the Telangana movement.”

Priyanka Gandhi accused the KCR-led BRS government of betraying thousands of statehood warriors, who sacrificed their lives for the creation of Telangana.

Priyanka, who flew into Hyderabad after a whirlwind tour of Karnataka, set the tone for the Congress poll campaign in Telangana, invoking her grandmother Indira Gandhi, who contested and won from Medak.

You are calling me the new Indiramma, then trust me.I will not make false promises.Vote Congress to victory o fulfil the aspirations of statehood.

As the daughter of Sonia Gandhi, who played a key role in granting statehood, I promise implementation of manifesto.

Making five promises as part of the Hyderabad Youth Declaration, on lines similar to the Farmers’ Declaration made in Warangal, Priyanka called upon the youth to choose properly in the next elections so that they don’t lose out on achieving the dreams for which over 1,200 Telangana martyrs fought and gave up their lives.

There was a thundering response when she was earlier referred to by TPCC chief Revanth Reddy as the “nayi Indira”, referring to which, she said, “When I see the love you shower on Indira ji, who passed away forty years ago, it puts enormous responsibility on me to ensure that Congress party lives up to all your expectations.” The Congress party leaders in Telangana has reportedly invited Priyanka Gandhi Vadra to contest in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in a bid to strengthen the party’s presence in the state.

Congress high command has responded positively to her proposal to contest from a constituency in Telangana and has identified Medak or Mahboobnagar Lok Sabha constituencies as potential options.Medak Lok Sabha constituency holds special significance for the Gandhi family as it was the constituency of the late Indira Gandhi during the crucial 1980 elections.

Some party leaders have suggested that Priyanka Gandhi contest from Mahboobnagar, a backward district, to ensure better performance for Congress in other Lok Sabha constituencies in the state. In 2014, the BRS chief contested and won from both Medak and Gajwel assembly constituencies but later resigned from Medak.

Medak district is seen as a bastion of the BRS, which won all seven assembly constituencies in 2014 and six in 2018.
