Kolkata 13th of September : Violence began to erupt in various parts of Kolkata nearby Howrah district, particularly in the Santragachi area after confrontations between the police and BJP supporters over the protest by the latter to the West Bengal secretariat against corruption issues on Tuesday.The area was tense when the second leg of the marching BJP supporters that was which was led by the state BJP president in West Bengal and party MP Sukanta Majumdar, and BJP legislator Agnimitra Paul, began moving towards the state secretary of Nabanna starting from Santragachi along the Howrah side.
The huge police presence was able to stop the procession of BJP supporters.The police resort to baton-charged water-cannons as well as water-cannons to disperse the angry BJP supporters who responded with bamboo poles and brickbats.
The police then were forced to fire of teargas to disperse the crowd.
In order to prevent them from moving further, Sukanta Magumdar and Agnimitra Pual instantly sat on the streets with their supporters close to Howrah Maidan and started a sitin protest.in demonstration.
Both claimed that the police together with the ruling Trinamool Congress activists, resorted to a slew of unprovoked attacks against their supporters.Then, Sukanta Majumdar was also placed in the jail van.
Separate fighting was reported between BJP supporters and police in the Santragachi railway station.The saffron wing activists began taking stones off the railway tracks, and began hurling them at the police.
The police also resort to the use of batons, teargas and shells to control the agitated mob.A few of the police officers were injured in the violence.
After the fighting, the traffic on the Kona Expressway got totally disrupted, with a large number of vehicles, including ambulances that were transporting patients in critical condition were stuck.
Trinamool Congress state general secretary and the party’s spokesman Kunal Ghosh, claimed that BJP leaders and members deliberately attack police personnel.”The BJP leaders know that they do not have a mass base or popularity in West Bengal.Therefore they’re trying to draw attention with these brutal strategies,” he said.
Sukanta Majumdar said that the police were taking action against BJP workers across the state since early Tuesday morning, well prior to the start of the demonstration.”Many of our supporters were not allowed to board trains heading to Kolkata this morning,” he alleged.
