India assists Sri Lanka to print school text book

By Susitha Fernando Colombo Sep 10, : The country is struggling with the ongoing economic crisis with rising inflation and a the dollar’s deterioration, Sri Lanka is to be granted Indian aid to print textbooks for children in schools in 2023.

Education Minister Susil Premejanatha has said that steps were made to import the raw materials such as ink and paper needed to print textbooks under the Indian credit line.

The printing of the text book is expected to be completed by the end of January for the 2023 school year beginning the next month of March.

Financially deficient with no dollars to buy printing materials education was among of the most afflicted of the economic crisis that the country is experiencing.

In March last year the island nation cancelled exams for millions of students with no printed exam papers.

Offering free education, Sri Lanka provides text books and school uniforms to students.

about $44 million is estimated to be spent on the production of books for 2023.

Although the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has agreed to provide $2.9 billion over the next four years with conditions to help save the economy of the country, India, as a single country, has offered the most financial assistance in the past, reaching $4 billion in 2022 in total.
