By Ashe O.Washington 7th of September : Florida federal Judge Aileen M Cannon’s ruling on appointment of an extra-special master to look over the documents taken from former President Donald Trump’s Florida residence may have helped lift her profile out of the shadows but it was deemed “deeply flawed in several of ways”.
Opposing the decision, President Trump’s ex-Attorney General William P.Barr observed that the judge didn’t adequately address a crucial issue in dispute that is whether a former president could apply executive privilege to stop the executive branch from reviewing documents when investigating the possibility of committing a crime. He stated that the answer is no.
“The conclusion, I believe was wrong,” Barr said on Fox News on Tuesday.”And I think that the government should appeal the decision. It’s seriously flawed in many of ways.”
But, Valentin Rodriguez Jr.is a defense lawyer who lives in West Palm Beach, who was a co-worker with Cannon 41, who was a prosecutor at the time she was prosecutor and has been in her presence as judge and said she was meticulous, thorough and was often willing to decide against the federal government, like she was in the Trump case.
“The general impression I’ve received from her isthat “I don’t believe everything the government is trying to say to me”,” Rodriguez said.”You shouldn’t expect that when you and the authorities come to some kind of agreement, whether it’s over sentencing or a pleadeal, that’s going to convince. In this sense you could consider her something of an independent thinker.”
Judge Cannon has gone to the extent of allowing the Trump legal team to clarify their position after the initial filing was unclear. In the hearing in the Trump case last week, she also seemed to assist one of Trump’s lawyers to remember the reason why his client’s request to have special masters included not just the review of documents covered by attorney-client privilege but also to evaluate the possibility of a case being protected by executive privilege.
As a judge she did not have a record of cases that garnered much attention prior to the time she was assigned to Trump’s high-profile lawsuit.
She received the case because Trump refused to discuss the issue with the magistrate that authorized the investigation of the Mar-a-Lago estate, reports in the media claimed.
A lot of the hearings she has in the Southern District of Florida were initially handled through Zoom during the time of the pandemic.Additionally, she is part of the courthouse in Fort Pierce, which has its fair share of routine immigration and drug cases, but is generally an area that is quieter of the state than bustling Miami. It’s like visiting a mausoleum reports claimed.
There isn’t much public information about Judge Cannon 41, who became well-known after her ruling on the Christmas weekend. She was a member of the conservative Federalist Society as a law student in 2005 and remained connected to the group as her career progressed which she disclosed at her Senate confirmation hearings in 2020.
But , according to those who were who were involved in the organization’s activities, she was not an extremely prominent participant.
Howard Srebnick, a Miami lawyer who attended the same high school as her stated: “I don’t think anyone can say she’s academically or intellectually unqualified. As a prosecutor he observed her to be courteous and respectful of defence lawyers, a trait isn’t shared by all prosecutors.”As an judge”, he said, “you might disagree with her decisions but she is always considerate of the procedure.”
