Dubai 5th of September : On the 28th of August, Virat Kohli, making an international return after an absence of months and half, was shaky in the top scoring position with 35 against Pakistan. When he played the 100th T20I game, Kohli had streaks of luck.
One of them was a big edge that was thrown in the slips of the second ball he confronted. There were plenty of edges, both inside and outside, being thrown in front of fielders or covering the stumps. But, once again on a Sunday in the Super Four match against Pakistan the speed and accuracy that had did not exist for Kohli last week was present. He top scored with 60 from 44 balls that included four sixes and fours, while running hard between wickets and was a master against pacers as well as punishing any short of.
It was the sixth ball that got the batsman the fifty in 36 balls, and was hit with some grace.Moving to the off side, Kohli whipped elegantly off his wrists, avoiding Mohammad Hafeez to hit the fuller delivery over the deep mid-wicket, bringing scores of fans joy and excitement at seeing the legendary batter in full flow.
However, Kohli didn’t get much support from the crowd as other players were swept aside in an attempt to be big, which forced Kohli to hold off pressing the accelerator pedal to go for it to the max to allow India to record a competitive 181/7.However, it wasn’t enough to give Pakistan a thrilling five-wicket victory.
“Today (In the Sunday’s game) I made an effort to hit at a higher speed. When wickets were lost the team communicated and the plans were changed which meant that I was required to bat until the 18th with Hooda.
If I had two or three of batsmen, I would have played with the same pace and tried to score more boundaries, or even sixes. However I was in the position where I needed to hit the ground,” said Kohli in the press conference following the match.
Kohli was elated of the way Pakistan came back in the latter part of the innings.Kohli also stated that he will keep batting in the same manner similar to what he did in the game on Sunday, while batting first in the future.”I think Haris Rauf bowled a fantastic last over.He hit the slower yorkers and slower balls, with that pace when you’re bowling, it’s difficult to take it away.I’m going to keep trying particularly batting first in the (same) method and try to take the game in the right direction and keep ahead of the pace of the game by understanding the conditions and be a free hitter.”
“As as long as I’m in good shape and am confident of my playing, I know that I’m capable of batting in different ways. It’s all about getting back to the rhythm and becoming confident with your game and when that’s done, the situation will dictate the way you play.”
In the Sunday’s game, India reverted back to their aggressive, ultra-attacking strategy with the bat. While they were able to score 181/7, they were restricted due to the departure of Suryakumar Yadav Rishabh Pant, and Hardik Pandya in the middle of the overs.
Kohli stated that the loss of wickets in the middle overs in trying to score 20-25 extra runs was not an cause of concern, because if the strategy is successful it can make a difference in the totals of India.
“If you’ve been watching the way we’ve played it’s been delivering the results we require as well in our middle overs our runs per over has increased. It’s something that I as a batsman was observant of and knew that this was an area we’re required to continue improving on.We’ve talked about this and sometimes it doesn’t go off as you’d like and today we were able to lose several wickets in the middle of the innings which didn’t let us go towards the 200 mark.”
“Because the first one to go was (Deepak) Hooda and me the next person to come in was Bhuvi (Bhuvneshwar Kumar) and the bowlers were next. This makes some of an impact however, we do have the ability to assess the situation and adapt in a way that is appropriate. But , given the circumstances and the circumstances, if we had a few of wickets in the bag, we could have scored additional runs.”
“We’re not frightened by losing wickets in the middle overs, as that’s how we like to play.We are hoping to score those 20-25 extra runs that will eventually make a impact in major games.”
