Santiago 5th September : Chileans headed to the polls to cast their votes on the new constitution they want to adopt. “This significant moment will be in our minds for an extended period of time.
We are watched across the globe,” Chilean President Gabriel Boric declared in an address on Sunday.
More than 15 million Chileans will be able to cast their votes in the referendum to “approve” or “reject” the constitution proposed in more than 3,000 voting locations across the country as the economic crisis persists and social pressures continue to increase.
The constitution was drafted in the year of 2021 under the guidance of a group of the 154 citizens who were charged with replacing the constitution that was that was written under the administration of Augusto Pinochet.Xinhua news agency reported.
It proposes structural changes in social protection, creates a decentralised and plurinational state, and places the emphasis on women’s rights as well as the environment.
Chileans supported the amendment of the constitution in an election that took place on October 25, 2020 in the course of which more than 7.5 million voters voted.
