Phnom Penh, Sep 5 : Cambodia and Cuba have pledged to improve relations and cooperation to mutual benefits, Cambodian Foreign Ministry spokesman Chum Sounry said.The promise was made at the meeting in Phnom Penh between Cambodian Vice-Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn and Cuba’s First Deputy Foreign Minister Gerardo Penalver Portal on Friday, Sounry added in a statement on Sunday.
He said that the two sides had discussed “the preparation for the forthcoming exchange of high-level visits between the two countries with the hope that these historic visits will open the way to the strengthening of bilateral relations”.
The two sides expressed their appreciation of an ongoing relationship between the two nations and a solid bilateral partnership especially in the fields of health education, education and sports.
Both sides expressed a desire to strengthen cooperation according to the spokesman.
According to Sounry, Penalver Portal appreciated the remarkable achievements of Cambodia in fighting Covid-19 as well as socio-economic growth, and Sokhonn declared that he was amazed with Cuba’s economic capacity, Xinhua news agency reported.
Both sides expressed interest in exchanging knowledge and experiences between Cuba and the United States, Sounry said, adding that they also discussed ways to strengthen collaboration between Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and Cuba.
Penalver Portal praised Cambodia for responding with the challenges arising from its ASEAN chairship in 2022 with “skillful diplomatic savvy and wisdom” according to the spokesperson.
Both sides exchanged of opinions on international and regional issues of common interest.They also promised to stand by one another in international affairs.
This was followed by second round of bilateral consultations on politics between Cambodian Foreign Ministry Standing Secretary of State Ouch Borith and Penalver Portal.
The Cuban official made a work visit to Cambodia from September 1 to 3.
