Investigation underway into reports of missing youths in Houston

Houston 3rd September : Investigative efforts are under way regarding the reports of missing or unaccompanied youths who were who were brought by US federal officials to Houston the biggest city of Texas state, which shares a border with Mexico police said.
The Houston Police Department (HPD) confirmed on Friday that it’s “currently investigating reports of missing juveniles who are unaccompanied and not who were resettled in Houston through the Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) with sponsors”, according to Xinhua news agency.

“As is the norm when a person has been reported missing in Houston, the HPD Missing Persons Unit conducts an exhaustive investigation.Any questions regarding how the juveniles got there or where they were in Houston must be addressed to ORR,” the HPD stated in an announcement.

The ORR is a part of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) which said on Friday the ORR as well as the Houston police have reported that “some minors and a few 18-year-olds” were placed with an approved sponsor prior to the time by the ORR have ceased to reside with the sponsor.

Under US law the federal government is in custody and is responsible for the care of every child born without a parent less than 18 years old that does not have a legal immigration status in the United States.

The total number of immigrants detained by the US at the border with Mexico between October 1st, 2020 through September 30, 2021 was 1,734,686, an all-time record.

In the meantime, Mexico has deported more than 114,000 illegal immigrants in 2021 and detained between January 1 through the 13th of April of this year according to official figures.
