Lucknow 2 Sep : The famous Rumi Darwaza in Lucknow is scheduled to close for repair because small cracks have formed in it over the years. The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has formulated plans for a remodel, but they will implement it only after the local administration has decided to block traffic on the highway on which the structure is located.
Dr Aftab Hussain the chief archaeologist of ASI, Lucknow region said: “The cracks are around 8 to 10 years old.The repair was scheduled some time ago and was scheduled to begin in September. To repair the structure district officials will need to stop traffic on the road for at most three months. If it isn’t fixed the situation could get worse for the iconic monument.”
In response to the incident in which a section of the parapet of the Bara Imambara fell, he stated: “The parapet fell partly due to the presence of the existence of an enormous box on top and also due to the wires hanging from it that allowed water to enter the structure.Repair work will begin soon , and our team has already inspected the parapet. After the inspection report of our team members, ASI Lucknow has sent an estimate of repairs to the authorities higher up to be approved.”
A representative of the administration of the district said that: “The district administration will begin immediately when the ASI submits the proposal to begin construction on Rumi Darwaza.”
The IIT-K has already declared the Rumi Darwaza as the’most fragile remaining memorial of the city’.
The Rumi Darwaza was constructed by Nawab Asaf-ud Daula in 1784.
