New York, Aug 30 : Pregnant women who are exposed to chemicals such as cyanuric acid, melamine and aromatic amines may be at risk of higher chance of cancer, according to an upcoming study.Melamine can be found in dishesware and plastics, flooring countertops in kitchens, as well as pesticides.
Cyuric acid is used as an disinfectant, plastic stabilizer as well as a cleaning solvent in swimming pools.Aromatic amines can be found in mascara, hair dye tattoo ink tobacco smoke, paint, as well as diesel exhaust.
The study was published in the journal Chemosphere found that cyanuric and melamine were detected in the majority of study participants’ samples. However, the highest concentrations were observed in women of color and those with more exposure to tobacco.
“These chemical compounds are of significant concern due to their link to developmental toxicity and cancer but they are not frequently controlled in the US,” said researcher Tracey J.Woodruff at the University of California, San Francisco.
People are exposed to aromatic amines and melamine in various of ways via the air they breathe eating food that is contaminated or inhaling household dust, or from drinking water , or making use of products that have dyes, plastic and pigments.
Melamine and its main byproduct, cyanuric acids, are both high-production chemicals that are more than 100 million pounds annually in this country all by itself.
If exposure to these substances occurs together, they could be more harmful than any one by itself.
The team measured the presence of 45 chemicals associated with cancer as well as other risk factors by using innovative methods to collect chemical traces or chemical compounds in urine samples taken from a small , but diverse collection of 171 women.
The study covered the years the years 2008 through 2020.
Melamine research was previously conducted with pregnancies women in Asian countries , or restricted to non-pregnant women in the US.
