New York, Aug 30 : Beginning as an unseeded player, British multiple-time Grand Slam winner Andy Murray advanced to the second round of the US Open on Monday, beating the No.24 seed Francisco Cerundolo in a first match at the Louis Armstrong Stadium. The 2012 US Open and three-time Grand Slam champion swept past his 24-year-old opponent in a humid, warm afternoon 7-5, 6-3, 7-5, 6-4, securing his spot in the second round, for the 15th time in New York.
Another upset occurred in the opening battles at the Flushing Meadows as American J.J.Wolf shook No.16 seed Roberto Bautista Agut of Spain.
Starting the court Court 5, No.87 Wolf displayed Spain’s No.16 seed Roberto Bautista Agut a quick exit from the year’s last Grand Slam with a convincing 4-4, 6-4, 6-4 victory.
It was ten years ago when Murray was the first British man since Fred Perry to win a Grand Slam title in 76 years. The day before, Murray admitted on the court that some of the details of his win may be a bit unclear.
“It seems like an eternity ago, and a lot has transpired since the time I first started in my professional career,”” Murray said.”Amazing memories It was a major moment for me, winning my first Grand Slam here against Novak and it’s an extremely, really long time ago”.
Murray’s world-class return game helped him through a tense first set even after he dropped his first service game.Murray, who is 36, would swiftly recover, securing the first break of serve to lead 4-1.Although he was unable to hold the lead by allowing Cerundolo to come back to even at 5-5, Murray was able to break in the 12th game and secure the set 7-5.
Murray made a comeback in the second set and took an 5-0 lead thanks to the power of two more break breaks as Cerundolo lost his grip in the sun’s midday heat.
Wolf, a 23-year-old veteran Ohio State collegiate standout and one of eight wild card participants maintained his composure and, with a handful of shirt changes and his coolness, he was able to take down the veteran Spaniard in two hours and 13 minutes to win the most impressive victory of his professional career.
“I tried to make sure I didn’t let my foot go off the gas pedal,” Wolf was quoted on the official site.
Wolf played a huge serve with 14 aces, and only four break points, and a solid baseline play with 46 winners to overcome an unbeaten three-set loss against Bautista Agut in their only previous encounter earlier in the year in Indian Wells.
