The shortage in water supply has been blamed on an abrupt drop in the amount of rain this summer.According to the meteorological department on the island the average amount of rainfall in July was 28.2 mm, which was the second-lowest since 2000.

The department of economic affairs reveal that as of Sunday at least three reservoirs in Taiwan have reported inadequate storage of water, with one in the southern city of Kaohsiung only reporting 13.7 percent.

As a response to the water shortage the water provider in Taiwan will reduce its supply to areas that are not urgent such as irrigation and washing of streets and walls, Xinhua news agency reported.

There haven’t been any Typhoons this year that could bring abundant rainfall to the island. The Meteorological Department has warned that there may be a further drought in the southern and central regions of the island in October even if there isn’t a storm by then.
