The Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanaani announced on Thursday Tehran will now closely examine the US response and then make a public announcement to the EU.

Iran has sent the EU its reaction to Borrell’s compromise offer this week, as well as some proposed amendments to which the US has now replied in its own way.

The two sides are “closer now than they were two of weeks ago”, National Security Council communications coordinator John Kirby told reporters in Washington.

“Gaps remain. We’re still not there,” The Washington Post quoted him as saying.

The representatives of Iran and other countries including Germany tried to agree during talks in Vienna in the middle of August, which was mediated by the EU to ease US sanctions on Iran and restore restrictions to its nuclear program.

These were the primary objectives of the 2015 agreement to stop Tehran from developing nuclear weapons.

The US had withdrawn from the accord in 2018 under the presidency of then-President Donald Trump.

At the conclusion of the talks in June Borrell from the EU Borrell had emphasized that the text of the agreement was ready and that only the wording of a “yes or no” was required.
