Islamabad 25 Aug : As as many as 903 people have been killed and nearly 1300 injured and thousands of people left homeless due to torrential rains and flash flooding continued to wreck chaos in Pakistan in the months since June the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) stated.A total of 70 persons died and more than 82,000 houses were damaged over the last 24 hours in various rain-related disasters in areas of the country according to NDMA statistics.
While the nation struggles with the effects of torrential rains that caused massive flooding, Pakistan urged the international community to aid with aid efforts to alleviate the situation, as reported by Xinhua news agency.
Minister of Climate Change Sherry Rehman said that the current climate disaster demands immediate national and international mobilization of humanitarian efforts not only in the form of shelter, food or essential survival necessities but also in the field of rescue.
“Given the magnitude of the catastrophe there is no doubt of the provinces or Islamabad being able to deal with this size of disaster by themselves.People’s lives are at risk and thousands of people are homeless.It is crucial that international partners provide aid,” the Minister said.
Sindh province was one of the regions that suffered the most in which 293 residents died in various rain-related events and subsequent flooding which was and the death of 230 in Balochistan province according to the NDMA.
The total number of deaths also included 169 deaths in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, and 164 in Punjab province.
Floods have also destroyed over 495,000 homes across Pakistan in addition to flooding roads and destroying bridges since June according to the NDMA.
With the prospect of more rain in the country in the wake of the forecast for more rains, Premier Shahbaz Sharif on Wednesday directed the authorities concerned to speed up the rescue and relief efforts in areas affected by flooding.
“The reconstruction in the areas affected by disasters is a massive undertaking.
This is only possible through the collective effort of all,” Sharif said.
Local authorities together with the Pakistani army continue with the relief and rescue efforts and are delivering food items tents, medicines, tents as well as other necessities to nearly all of the affected areas in the South Asian country.
