Mexico City, Aug 25 : Mexican federal authorities on Wednesday detained one of the suspects of having ordered the killing of Tijuana photographer Margarito Martinez Esquivel in January.David Lopez Jimenez, who is known as “Cabo 20”, was arrested on Wednesday in the state of Nuevo Leon, reports the news agency dpa.
Baja California state Attorney General Ricardo Ivan Carpio announced the arrest at a press gathering later in the day.
“He is in custody as the intellectual creator of the (murder) of photojournalist Margarito Martinez Esquivel.Other charges will be brought (against him),” Carpio said.
Martinez who reported on crime and security in Tijuana was shot to death in the front of his house on the 17th of January as he left for work.
The detention of the prominent victim comes just a few weeks before the prosecutors are set to argue their case against three others accused of conducting the attack.
The arrest on Wednesday comes following the death of the journalist Fredid Roman was shot dead in Chilpancingo.of Chilpancingo on Monday.
Roman was journalist for over 35 years.
He later wrote columns on politics and education.
This year is already classified as being one of the most deadly for media professionals in Mexico.
A little over a week ago, the journalist Juan Arjon was killed in the north-west region of the country.
The media group Article 19 has counted at 14 deaths in 2022, which is a record for one year.
Mexico was ranked as the most risky nation in the world for journalists in 2021 for the third time in consecutively by Reporters Without Borders.
Local corrupt politicians are often the ones responsible for the murders.
