New Delhi, Aug 23 : In order to encourage alternative fuels The Centre announced that BS-VI vehicles will now be capable of retrofitting CNG and LPG kits. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has issued a notice about retrofitting CNG and LPG kits in gasoline vehicles with BS-VI as well as replacing of diesel engines with CNG/LPG engines in the case of BS-VI cars weighing less than 3.5 tonnes.
As of today retrofitting CNG and LPG kits is allowed in motor vehicles that comply with the BS-IV emission norms.
The law states that diesel cars that weigh less than 3.5 tonnes can be equipped with engines running on CNG or LPG.
The plan is aimed at decreasing air pollution.Although the new regulations will allow more car owners to retrofit CNG kits however, the issue of accessibility of CNG is a problem for the consumers.
Despite the significant increase in CNG stations in many cities, long lines of vehicles at numerous CNG filling stations are an everyday sight.
The government is encouraging alternative fuels like CNG biofuels, LNG and electric charging.to reduce the dependence on fossil fuels.
According to government data the amount of CNG stations set up by various authorized entities grew from 938 in 2014 to 4,331 in May 2022.
Additionally the international market has witnessed a substantial rise in the prices of natural gas in the short and long term and this has affected the price of gas domestically in India. This, in turn, has affected the price of CNG that is made through compression of natural gas.
