Melbourne 21 August : The popular singer Sona Mohapatra caught a packed auditorium off guard when she was called to the stage during the ongoing Indian Film Festival of Melbourne to present an award as well as judge the enduring and well-loved dance contest of the festival.The singer entertained the packed auditorium with members of the Indian diaspora, government officials including ministers and lawmakers of parliament, as well as the mayor of the city with an act of spontaneity.
She sang, a cappella the ‘Kuhukuhu Bole Koyaliya’ duet performed by Lata Mangeshkar and Mohammad Rafi for the pan-India 1957 film, ‘Suvarna sundari featuring legendary Akkineni Nageswara Rao as well as Anjali Devi.It was her tribute to the late Nightingale of India, Lata Mangeshkar.
In a statement about the experience Sona stated: “When the festival organisers discovered that I had collaborated with the legendary Aussie band INXS in the single “Afterglow,” they asked that I sing a few lines to celebrate the India-Australia friendship.
“I discovered that the house orchestra had a conductor who was a jazz singer.
I asked the musician to sing with the violin.It was awe-inspiring to sing “Afterglow” in the country of INXS.I decided to close this with an ode to the passing of the Nightingale of India, Lata Ji.”
