Li asked the six provinces with the highest growth potential that together account for 45 percent of economic output to “proactively” boost growth, according to the DPA news agency.

“They must effectively implement the policy package to stabilize the economy, and also unlock their own potential for policy,” he said.

He also stated that the provinces should play a major in in creating and sustaining jobs and jobs, noting the “sluggish demand can be a significant obstacle in economic growth”.

Li’s comments were an open acknowledgment that the Chinese economy is deteriorating and come as important indicators like retail sales, industrial production and fixed-asset investments all fell lower than forecasts in July.

In a surprise move to boost the economy China’s central bank has also slashed some interest rates.

In the second quarter of 2018, China’s economy only grew by 0.4 percent, well under the government’s target of 5.5per cent for the whole year.
