“The court is quite active in the summer when it’s this.Physically, I’m exhausted,” Murray was quoted as saying by atptour.com.”I experienced some issues with cramps during the match similar to Washington and that’s something I have to take care of.

“I tried to push the ball a little more and get it to the net.I didn’t have much success when I got there but the intent was there.I was a bit more aggressive on the second-serve return.

The last game, I was fighting for an avenue to get through,” he added.

After his two-hour and 54-minute victory, Murray now holds a 35-14 record in Cincinnati after he won the title in the years 2008 and in 2011.

Murray, 35, is hoping for more success in the hard-court tournament when he will take on the Englishman Cameron Norrie in the second round, after the ninth seed beat Dane Holger Rune 7-6(5) 7-6(5), 4-6 7-6(5), 4-6, 6-1.

“He is quite different from the way Stan plays, as lefty,” Murray said looking ahead to the Norrie showdown.”Flat on the backhandand and heavy topspin with the forehand. We’ve been spending a bit of time playing tennis as a team, which means there shouldn’t be many surprises for me.”

Murray was able to arrive in Ohio after coming off of the disappointment of a first-round defeat in Montreal the week before. But the 46-time tour-level champion has displayed indications of potential this year and has reached the finals in Sydney and Stuttgart which helped him climb to the top 50 in the ATP Rankings for the first time since 2018.

Wawrinka was playing in the ATP Masters 1000 event for the 13th time with his best result being a win in the semi-finals in 2012.
