Washington, Aug 15 : A driver drove his vehicle into the vehicle barricade in Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C.and fired gunshots before taking his own life.The incident took place on East Capitol Street and Second Street shortly after 4 a.m.on Sunday morning, Xinhua news agency reported in an official press release by the Capitol Police.
The vehicle “became incinerated in flames” as the driver was trying to get out of it.Then he “fired numerous shots in the air” along East Capitol Street.
“When our officers were alerted to the sound of shooting they immediately reacted and were able to get close to the suspect at the time he killed himself in self-defense,” the press release said.
No one else was injured.
It is not clear if the suspect was targeting members of Congress who are in recessand it doesn’t appear that police fired their guns police said.
Investigators are investigating the background of the man and background, while D.C.’s Metropolitan Police Department is conducting the investigation into the death of the man.
