A source from Nepal’s foreign ministry confirmed that the minister of foreign affairs decided not to sign specific agreements regarding the BRI because he believes that Nepal requires additional negotiations to conclude connectivity projects, such as the much-hyped Kerung-Rasuwagadhi cross.

“We require only grants and not commercial loans under the BRI to develop connectivity projects.

There is a strong fear within the political establishment that Nepal could also fall into debt like an other South Asian neighbour Sri Lanka in the event it is willing to accept commercial loans from China,” the source explained.

Nepal has signed an Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) regarding the Belt and Road with China in May 2017.

However, it hasn’t completed a single project in the BRI as of.

In the talks on Wednesday in which the foreign minister Khadka was, however, able to accelerate China-funded project development in Nepal.

Nepal reiterates One China Policy

In his discussions with the Nepali foreign minister, he also emphasized the country’s determination to “One China Policy”, days after China sought international backing to support its position regarding the Taiwan issue that erupted following the unannounced visit of US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan, a self-ruled island last week.

“Minister Khadka reiterated Nepal’s unwavering commitment to the One China Policy and assured that the Nepali territory is not to be used in any way that is aimed at China,” read a statement released by Nepal’s ministry of foreign affairs.

The previous day, on the 3rd of August Chinese Ambassador Hou Yanqi enlisted Nepal’s support in the Taiwan issue, pointing out the long-standing commitment of Nepal to the One China Policy.The envoy praised Nepal’s long-standing support for the One-China principle and its unwavering opposing “Taiwan independence”.

In Wednesday’s talks at the level of delegation with Wang, the Nepali counterpart Wang repeated China’s ongoing and unwavering support for Nepal’s sovereignty as well as its territorial integrity, independence and sovereignty and pledged to aid in the development of Nepal in line with the priorities of the Nepali government according to the ministry.

Nepal and China agree to accelerate projects that are not BRI

The foreign ministers reviewed the status of the overall aspects of Nepal-China relations and cooperation, and agreed to strengthen cooperation in various areas like connectivity, trade as well as investments, health, tourism, agriculture, poverty reduction, education, disaster management and culture, as well as people to people exchanges, among others.

During the talks during the talks, the Chinese foreign minister expressed his that China would be supportive of the study of Nepal-China cross-border transmission line, as agreed upon during the official trip to Nepal in March of this year.

Furthermore, China will also provide Nepal with an additional 2 million RMB worth of medical equipment and logistics, as per the Nepali foreign minister.

After a three-day trip The Nepali foreign minister is scheduled to return home on Thursday.
