The High Court approves bail for Akali’s and leader Majithia in the case of drugs

Chandigarh 10 August, Chandigarh : The Punjab and Haryana High Court on Wednesday granted bail to Shiromani’s senior Akali Dal (SAD) leader Bikram Singh Majithia.Bikram was in jail for more than five months over his suspected involvement in an illegal drug case that was registered in December 2021.
A Division Bench of Justices M.S.Ramachandra Rao and Sureshwar Thakur had reserved an decision on the bail plea on the 29th of July.

Majithia an ex-minister who was incarcerated in the Central Jail in Patiala, had filed a petition with to the High Court for the regular bail in the case filed pursuant to the rules of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act.

In his petition Majithia stated that the Congress administration in the state would not leave a opportunity to abuse its power and position to wreak revenge on its political opponents and even the petitioner had been a victim.

In a decision in a decision, the High Court observed that there is nothing on the evidence indicating the possession, transportation, or storage by or the recovery of any kind of contraband from petitioner.”All recovery of contraband in the final trial were made by certain individuals and petitioners were not shown to be involved in this regard,” it observed.

“We are satisfied that there are reasonable grounds to consider that petitioner isn’t guilty of the charges against him in the FIR and he is unlikely to be guilty of such crimes while in custody,” said the judges.

“It takes some time for the trial process to begin and end.Therefore, no purpose that is worthwhile will be served even the petitioner is held in the custody of the judicial system for a longer period of time.We’re of the view that the continued detention of the petitioner, which began on February 24th, is not justified and he is entitled to be released under bail.” the Bench said.
