Bengaluru : , Dec 30, 2010 – After discussions with Basavaraj Bommai the Chief Minister of Karnataka, Kannada organizations have rescinded their decision to hold a state wide bandh on Friday.This was to protest the burning of Kannada flags and demand a banning of Maharashtra Ekikarana Samithi’s (MES).After considering my request, Kannada activists have rescinded their decision to hold a bandh.They are very grateful,” CM Bommai said on Thursday.
Araga Jnanendra, Home Minister had asked the activists not to plan for a riot and promised them that the government would protect Kannada’s culture, language and people.
Kannada organizations under Vatal Nagaraj, activist, issued the December 31st bandh (shutdown call) against the background of Sangolli Rayanna’s desecration and Basavanna’s statues in Belagavi.
But prominent Kannada organizations backed off the call, stating that it wouldn’t serve any purpose.Narayana Gowda’s Karnataka Rakshana Vedike declared it would not support the bandh calls.
On Thursday, the group organized a large protest calling for a ban of the MES.Praveen Shetty, another Kannada activist declared his opposition to the protest.
Tradesmen and businessmen expressed concern about the Covid pandemic, which has already affected them severely.They will be losing a lot if their businesses close on Friday.
Already, the government is taking action against those who have desecrated statues.
They were also charged with sedition and booked under the Goonda Act.Belagavi was a district that shares a border to Maharashtra and witnessed events during the assembly session.These developments threatened peace and harmony within the city.
The situation was fortunately managed by the Karnataka government.
