Washington, December 29, : .Separate Covid-19 epidemics took place on two US Navy warships.
They infected a large number of crew members and disrupted their operations.The USS Milwaukee was deployed in East Pacific and Caribbean to stop drug trafficking.
It had more than 20 crew members who were reportedly positive.
Littoral combat ship Naval Station Mayport, Florida set sail on December 14th for an ongoing mission.
However, the vessel was forced to stay in Cuba at Naval Station Guantanamo bay in Cuba to replenish and fuel on December 20.
In a Friday statement, the Navy stated that Milwaukee’s crew is “100% immunized”, and those with the virus were kept off other crew members.It also said that some of the infected had mild symptoms.
According to the New York Times, there wasn’t any need to hospitalize anyone infected.
The Guantanamo bay base hospital was also offering free booster shots to sailors, per request by the Milwaukee.
The USS Halsey, a destroyer, delayed moving its homeport from Pearl Harbor, Hawaii to San Diego (California), after about one-third its crew received positive results for Covid-19.
This was reported by the Associated Press (AP), citing Navy Commander Sean Robertson as spokesperson for the 3rd Fleet.
Robertson stated that almost all crew members had been vaccinated and no one was admitted to hospital.
He also said booster shots are available to crew members.
Robertson stated that positive samples have so far been confirmed to be Omicron-type.
On Sunday, the Halsey finally left Hawaii.
The Navy released the most recent data and found that more than 98% of active-duty sailors were fully vaccinated.
As of December 22, 5,361 sailors from active components remained unvaccinated.
On December 15, the Navy issued updated guidelines that would allow sailors to refuse vaccinations.
