Paris, December 13, 2013 : .The French President Emmanuel Macron praised the result of New Caledonia’s third independence referendum.
It is an overseas French territory located east of Australia, in the South Pacific.Macron stated in a Sunday press release that 96.49% of Caledonians voted against France’s independence.
“Caledonians chose to stay French.It was their choice.This decision is an act of pride for the nation and a sign of national recognition.”This evening, France looks more beautiful than ever because New Caledonia decided to stay,” said the French President.
Under the Noumea Accord (named after New Caledonia’s capital) signed in 1998, the French overseas territory was granted the right to three referendums on its future political status, Xinhua news agency reported.
The first referendum was held in 2018, with 56.7 per cent of the voters against independence, and the second in 2020 showed a 53.3 per cent of population against independence.
