Dar Es Salaam (Dec 13) – At least 37 cases have been reported of cholera in Tanzania’s Southern Highlands Region of Rukwa according to a medical officer.Benjamin Chota (Nkasi District Chief Medical Officer) added on Sunday that three cases of Cholera were first reported to Korongwe Ward Dispensary on December 2.
Chota stated that after the cases had been reported, a group of medical professionals collected samples from three people and tested them for cholera.
According to him, Nkasi’s district officials created an emergency site for treating patients with cholera.It was home to 37 patients.
“Twenty-five of the cholera patients were treated and discharged and 12 patients are still receiving treatment at the makeshift site,” the official added.
Peter Lijualikali, the Nkasi District Commissioner, urged medical personnel in the district to ensure that the deadly disease was contained before it spread to other parts of the district.
