Guwahati (12/12/IANS) Officials announced on Sunday that two forest guards were taken into custody after the death of a child and injuries to her mother.They opened fire in an attempt to control wild elephants from Assam’s Kamrup district.Officials stated that forest staff were trying to repel an elephant herd, and fired shots into the air.However, two bullets accidentally hit Arbi Daimary, two years old, and Malobika Daimary, her mother, at Bondapara in Kamrup, Rural (Rural), on Saturday.
After her injuries, the child died.The Gauhati Hospital is treating the mother.
Massive protests were organized by locals demanding the punishment of forest staff and compensation for the victims’ families.This led to two forest guards being arrested, Sidhartha Sinha and Imtiaz Ahmad.
Kamrup (Rural) Deputy Commissioner Kailash Kartik and Superintendent of Police Hitesh Roy had visited the Bondapara division forest office and assured the people of appropriate action against the forest guards.
