Kiev, Nov 19, : , Volodymyr Zelensky, President of Ukraine said his country is ready to lower the price for gas transit across its territory to try to avoid the European energy crisis.Zelensky, in a telephone conversation with President Ursula von der Leyen of the European Commission, stated that Ukraine could also supply its underground gas storage units for strategic fuel reserves.This is according to Xinhua news agency.
Zelensky, von der Leyen and others also talked about the possibility of creating an international platform to strengthen energy security.
Europe faces an energy crisis because of the rise in prices for natural gas as global demand increases.
Ukraine is a major transit country for Russian gas from Europe.It has an extensive gas transportation network that includes more than 37.900km of underground storage facilities and gas pipelines.
The contract was signed by Gazprom, Russia’s largest gas company Gazprom and the Ukrainian state-owned energy company Naftogaz in December 2019.It covers the transportation of natural gas from Russia to Europe between 2020-2024.
The Ukraine exported 55.8 Billion cubic meters of Russian gas to Europe in 2020.
Local media reported that the Russian-Ukrainian Gas Transit Contract sets the transit tariff at $31.72 for 1,000 cubic meters.
