Montevideo, December 30, : , The Uruguayan Public Health Minister Daniel Salinas confirmed that the first Omicron Covid-19 cases have been reported in the country.Salinas stated Wednesday that researcher GregorioIraola from the Pasteur Institute of Montevideo was able “to confirm” the Omicron variant had entered the country.
The Pasteur Institute will provide more details on Thursday after a meeting of Council of Ministers headed by President Luis Lacalle Pou.
He said, “We expect (viral) behaviour similar to that of worldwide,” even though 75% of the population has been fully vaccinated.
On Tuesday, Uruguay recorded 913 Covid-19 cases, which is the most daily since July 1.Active cases rose from 4,230 and 4,820 to reach the highest level since July 17.
This pandemic has resulted in the deaths of 6,167 people and 408,894 infections in South America.
