Stockholm, December 13, 2013 : .Two crewmembers were reported missing.
A rescue operation was initiated after the cargo ship that capsized off Sweden’s south coast on Monday.At 3.30 a.m.GMT (0230 GMT), the accident occurred between the Swedish capital of Ystad, and Bornholm, Denmark, in foggy weather conditions.
Aftonbladet in Sweden reported that around 10 helicopters and ships from Denmark and Sweden were used for the rescue mission.
According to Jesper Berthelsen (duty officer at the Danish Armed Forces Operations Centre), the rescue team was initiated by an alarm system from the vessel that had capsized.The crew were not found for several hours following the incident.
“We are searching for two missing, but we do not know whether they are in the ship or the water.We have flown over the site by helicopter many times, but have found nothing but wreckage in the water,” Berthelsen said.
The capsized vessel is a 55-meter Danish-registered Karin Hoj.It was not loaded and was sailing from Sodertalje in Sweden to Nykobing Falster in southern Denmark with two people on board.
The other vessel, the 90-meter British-registered Scot Carrier, was en route from Salacgriva in Latvia to Montrose in Britain.The crew is reportedly safe.
