Tripura Will Hold Civic Polls On Thursday Under The Shadow Of Violence

Agartala (Nov 24) – Tripura will vote in Civic elections on Thursday amid allegations of Violence.Officials said that security measures were further tightened following the Supreme Court’s directives.
Arindam Nath, Inspector General of Police, Law and Order, stated that in addition to the Tripura Police and Tripura State Rifles, a large amount of Central Reserve Police Forces (CRPF) and Border Security Forces (BSF) troopers would also be deployed.

Nath stated to IANS that the TSR troopers and police would be deployed at the polling stations, while the Central forces would be deployed for the area domination and maintaining law order.

He stated that 644 polling stations located under 20 police stations are classified differently in terms of vulnerability and sensitivity, and that deployment of forces would follow suit.

Another official from the police stated that sufficient vehicles were available to all 20 police stations in eight district for mobile patrolling.

According to a statement by the police headquarters, “After the Supreme Court’s directives, 15 additional sections of CRPF have been provided for the Agartala Municipal Corporation AMC and other Civic bodies elections.”

“Special drive launched to execute pending warrants.A total of 161 warrants have been executed, and 433 preventive arresteds have been made since the declaration of the Civic elections.In all cases of political Violence, specific cases have been filed under the appropriate sections of law.It stated that 57 cases under the appropriate sections of law have been filed so far after the declaration (on October 22) of the election.”

After a petition by Trinamool Congress Rajya Sabha member Sushmita dev, the top court asked the Tripura Police for assistance in ensuring that no political party was prevented from exercising their rights, for the peaceful Thursday municipal elections.

The Tripura High Court also gave similar directions following petitions from CPI-M.

Amid reports of political Violence and an increase in activities by the Trinamool over the past three months during the elections to the 51-seat AMC, and other Civic bodies across Tripura, Thursday’s elections attracted national attention.

In addition to intervention by the Supreme Court, Tripura High Court and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP President J.P.Nadda.

Despite allegations of Violence and intimidation in the pre-poll period by all the opposition parties and parties, the ruling BJP won 112 (34%) of the 334 seats in the AMC and 19 other urban bodies — Municipal Councils or Nagar Panchayats — before Thursday’s elections.

Officials from the State Election Commission (SEC), who are conducting the Civic polls, stated that the BJP has already secured a majority of seven Civic bodies in Jirania and Ranir Bazar in western Tripura.Santir Bazar in southern Tripura, Kamalpur in northern Tripura, and Santir Bazar in western Tripura.

785 candidates from various parties, including the BJP and the CPI-M–led Left, the Trinamool and the Congress are vying to win 222 seats in AMC and other Civic institutions.The November 28th will see the counting of votes.
