Social reformer, Samaram Brother Lavanam is no more

Noted atheist and social reformer G.Lavanam, 86, passed away on Friday morning at Ramesh Hospitals in Vijayawada due to multiple organ failure.Lavanam, was an Indian social reformer and Gandhian who worked to remove untouchability in the Indian society.He was an atheist and co-founded the institution, Samskar, with his wife Hemalatha Lavanam.

Lavanam was born to atheist leader Goparaju Ramachandra Rao “Gora” and Saraswathi Gora in 1930.He began social work at the age of 12 under the guidance of his father.

He was the interpreter of Vinoba Bhave during his land reform movement in Andhra Pradesh and parts of Orissa.He married outside his caste to Hemlata Lavanam, daughter of noted poet Gurram Joshua, in 1960 at Sevagram.

He and his wife worked to reform the Jogini system prevalent in Andhra Pradesh through their Samskar.His wife Hemalata died in 2008 at the age of 75.

Lavanam won several awards for his contribution to society, He won Jamnalal Bajaj Award for resettling and providing employment opportunity to the members of Denotified Tribes.In 2011 he won Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Service Society for his contribution to world peace and service to humanity.

Lavanam is brother of well know sexologist Dr Samaram.
