Islamabad 16 August : Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has offered Pakistan’s mediation services to bring China and the US and China like it did a few decades ago, according to a media report.

The conversation was focused on global, regional, and national issues, and centered in particularly on the part Pakistan can be able to play in “preventing the world from slipping into an ever more complex cycle of crises” as stated by the publication.

PM Shehbaz described the Pakistani foreign policy as one of “friendliness and goodwill towards all nations of the world”.

“Pakistan has maintained a long-standing tradition of excellent relations with China and the United States. In the past it was Pakistan that served as an intermediary in opening relations between the United States and the Peoples’ Republic of China,” he said, according to Geo News report.

The premier stated that Pakistan has always stressed the importance of not taking any confrontational approach.”Bloc policies and any move towards a cold war are not going to yield any positive outcomes and in fact, it is detrimental for stability and growth,” he stressed.

“Pakistan believes that interstate relations should be founded on respect for each other and the peaceful resolution of disputes, while adhering to the fundamentals of the UN charter and international law,” he added.

To a question regarding what it would be to Pakistan as well as the rest of the world in the event that nations were asked to pick sides, especially considering the close relations Pakistan and China have and the close ties between China and Pakistan, PM Shehbaz stated that although the relationship could be “very special”, Pakistan and the US “have also maintained a long-standing, historical bilateral relationship that covers all areas of mutual concern”.

“The world cannot afford to slide into a new time of Cold War or bloc politics.I believe that polarisation will have serious implications for the global economy, which is afflicted by the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic as well as the Ukraine crisis,” the premier told Newsweek, Geo News reported.

He stated that developing countries, including Pakistan are “already experiencing external shocks that affect their socio-economic well-being and do not wish to increase the severity of these problems caused by major power competition”.
