States or Union territories may seek UGC to postpone the exams says the Supreme Court.
Earlier, many students across the country have urged the University Grant Commission (UGC) to promote without conducting final year exams due to the ongoing Coronavirus.
A few states like Maharashtra have supported the decision and cancelled the final year exams.Several petitioners have also appealed the same to the Supreme Court and urged to permit to promote the students without final year exams throughout the country.
However, the apex court has ruled out their request and said, the examinations cannot be cancelled by the state governments based on the Disaster Management Act.The Supreme Court informed that it is beyond the state’s jurisdiction, and students cannot be promoted without a degree.
But the chief court has given some relief to the state’s governments stating the States or Union territories may seek UGC’s permission to extend the deadline for the final year exams.On July 6th UGC released a set of mandatory guidelines to all the universities to manage final year exams by the end of September.
