Seoul, Sep 3 : The South Korean government’s YouTube channel was hacked on Saturday, apparently to broadcast a cryptocurrency-related video including Tesla CEO Elon Musk, but has been restored, according to sources.In the early hours of 3.30 a.m.it was reported that the official channel of the government on the platform for video sharing seemed to be hacked, since its name was changed to “SpaceX Invest” and broadcast live coverage of cryptocurrency, which included an interview with American billionaire and SpaceX founder Musk.
An official from the ministry of ministry of culture and tourism that oversees the YouTube account, said that they were aware of the issue at 6 a.m.and took measures to secure the account and then reinstated the account around 7:20 a.m.
The official claimed that the password and ID of the account were believed to have been stolen.
Google YouTube, the parent company of YouTube verified that the YouTube channel was compromised, according to Yonhap the news agency.
An official from Google Korea said that it is currently investigating the root cause of the incident.
The attack comes after an attack of the YouTube channel run by the Korea Tourism Organisation (KTO) under the tourism ministry earlier in the week.
According to KTO the channel, with approximately 509,000 subscribers, was originally targeted on Thursday and then the following day.The channel is not available.
A KTO official told the KTO the Google immediately blocks access to its account when it detects suspicious connections.
