New Delhi, Aug 11 : Meta on Thursday announced that it was testing end-to end encryption for individual chats using its Messenger application.The company is currently testing the security of storage in Messenger which is a new feature that lets users backup encrypted chats from end-to-end.
“We’re also beginning a test of automated end-to-end encrypted chat conversations on Messenger and are expanding the features available,” said the company.
“As with end-to-end encrypted chats secure storage means that we will not be able to read your messages unless you decide to notify us,” said Sara Su Director of Product Management, Messenger Trust.
“This week, we’ll be testing encrypted chats that are default end-to end between certain people.If you’re in the group of test participants there’s a chance that you may find that some of your most frequently used chats could be automatically end-to-end encrypted, meaning you don’t need to sign up in to this feature.” she added.
You’ll be able to access your messages history however, any conversations or messages with the person you’re talking to will be encrypted from end-to-end.
Secure storage will become the primary method of securing the history of all encrypted conversations on Messenger.
Users will have a variety of options to restore their messages, if they decide to do this.
“There are two options that are encrypted from end-to-end to access your backups.either create a PIN , or generate an encrypted code and both of which you’ll have to save” Meta said.Meta.
You can also opt to restore your Messenger conversations through the cloud of a third party.
The company also said that it would also be testing the capability to delete messages, respond to Facebook Stories and offer other ways to gain access to your end-to-end encrypted communications and calls.
Meta has announced that it will also getting rid of vanish mode in Messenger but messages that disappear will be accessible in the settings of end-to-end encrypted chats.
“This mode allows all messages to disappear after a specified date after they’ve been viewed.Chats in the vanish mode on Instagram aren’t secure from end to end, but will be accessible,” it added.
In the year 2012, Instagram began a limited trial of opt-in encryption of end-to-end calls and messages on Instagram and then, in February, they expanded the scope of testing to include people in Ukraine as well as Russia.
“Soon we’ll extend the test in order to cover individuals in more countries and include additional features, such as chat groups,” said Meta.
