Libyan PM-designate is calling for a peaceful handover of the power

Tripoli 25 Aug : Fathi Bashagha, the Prime Minister-designate of the Libyan parliament-approved government has called for a calm transfer of the power.
Bashagha has urged the Prime Minister Abdul-Hamed Dbeibah to “resort to peace and avoid war” according to Xinhua news agency.

In a letter dated Wednesday Bashagha wrote to Dbeibah: “This is an honest and patriotic appeal that we are looking at your patriotic response in order to protect the interests of the nation.”

However, Dbeibah did not agree with Bashagha’s demand to surrender the power to him and asked him to consider holding elections “instead of a military coup”.

Libya is currently in an impasse on the political front.

The eastern-based House of Representatives, or Parliament, resigned its confidence from Dbeibah’s Government of National Unity in Tripoli and in March, the House of Representatives (or Parliament) voted in March to establish an entirely new government, led by Bashagha.

Dbeibah did not support the March vote and stated that he was only going to transfer the power to an elected administration.

On Tuesday on Tuesday, the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) expressed its concern over the militarization of Libya and the growing tensions in Libya.

“The UN Support Mission in Libya is watching with great concern the ongoing mobilisation of forces, and the threat to use force to settle legitimacy claims in Libya,” UNSMIL stated in an announcement.

The statement called on the Libyan parties to use elections to settle issues.

“The Mission calls for immediate de-escalation, and reiterates that the recourse to force by any party of force by any side cannot be tolerated and does not result in an outcome that will be recognized of the international community.” UNSMIL said.

The oil-rich North African country has been in turmoil since the collapse of the late president Muammar Gaddafi’s administration in 2011.
