In a recent revelation, Priyanka Chopra discussed her decision to let go of the fight for pay equality in the Bollywood industry.
However, Kangana Ranaut, a prominent actress, claimed that she was the first one to advocate for this cause and shed light on the fact that several female actors still work for free today.
Kangana Ranaut utilized her Instagram Stories platform to share a video featuring Priyanka Chopra discussing the existing pay gap in the Bollywood industry. In the video, Priyanka revealed that she used to receive only about 10 percent of what her male co-stars were paid.
Kangana, known for her outspoken nature, responded to this by stating that women in the industry before her simply conformed to these patriarchal norms. She further asserted that she was the first one to actively fight for pay parity and highlighted the shocking reality that her contemporaries offered to work for free on the same roles she was negotiating for.According to Kangana, most A-list female actors do films without compensation and even resort to other means to secure roles, fearing that they may lose opportunities to the "right people." Additionally, Kangana cleverly pointed out that these actors subsequently employ a shrewd tactic of releasing articles where they proclaim themselves as the highest-paid individuals.
In addition, Kangana declared herself as the only female actor who receives equal pay to her male counterparts. She stated unequivocally that in the film industry, she is the only one paid at par with male actors, placing the blame solely on the others for not receiving comparable compensation.
During an interview, Priyanka Chopra candidly expressed her own experiences, confessing that she never had pay parity in Bollywood.Despite having acted in nearly 60 movies, Priyanka revealed that she consistently received only about 10 percent of what her male co-actors were paid.
She acknowledged the substantial pay gap that exists and lamented that many other women in the industry still grapple with this issue.
Moreover, Priyanka shared her personal struggles with self-image, revealing that she used to believe she was not as beautiful as her fair-skinned co-actors.She believed she had to work much harder, even though she possessed more talent than some of her counterparts. She attributed this mindset to the normalization of such biases in the industry and acknowledged her need for education and growth throughout her career.
