NE has been pushed into an ‘abyss” of insurgency, lawlessness and chaos by the government: Cong

New Delhi, December 30, : .A day after Centre extended AFSPA Nagaland’s six-month extension, Congress on Thursday slammed the BJP government, claiming that the Centre’s “lust for power” has driven the North East into chaos, lawlessness, and insurgency.
Randeep Surjewala, Congress chief spokesperson, stated that Modi Govt had turned a peaceful North East into a sham of lawlessness and insurgency.

He said, “The current state has been created by our complete inability to understand the ethos and diversity of its people as well as its concerns, which we have attempted to destroy democracy to take power,”

The Centre granted Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) to Nagaland until June 30, next year.

This declared the whole state a ‘disturbed’ area.

This act gives security forces the power to arrest and conduct operations without a warrant.

The act also grants immunity to security forces in the event of the death or attempted murder.

This is in the midst of protests against the withdrawal of AFSPA in many districts of Nagaland since an Army unit murdered 14 civilians from Mon district earlier in the month mistaking them for insurgents.

The Union Home Minister Amit Shaikh met with Chief Ministers of Nagaland, Assam, and other state officials to discuss the current situation in Nagaland. They decided to create a committee that would investigate the Nagaland withdrawal of AFSPA.

It was expected to report back in just 45 days.

Recently, the Nagaland Assembly passed a unanimous resolution to repeal this Act.It was anticipated that the Centre would limit the jurisdictional authority of the AFSPA only to border areas. This is in response to huge resentment from the masses.
